Albacore Tuna are encountered of our
coast from about mid July to about October.
Also called "Longfins.", these Tuna are
found as close as 30 miles to as far as 120
miles.
The usual method for Tuna is trolling jigs
like Tuna Clones. When the boat hooks fish
on the troll, anglers drop jigs like Fish
Traps, various iron jigs or live bait to
bring more fish to the boat. Along with the
Albacore, an occasional
Bluefin Tuna is caught. In the past we
have also caught
Skipjack Tuna.
Tuna trips leave at roughly 4am and return
about 12 hours later. Some trips are even
longer. Thirty pound test is fine to troll
for albacore. Using line beyond 50 pound
test may actually hamper your angling.
Experienced anglers use Fluorocarbon
leaders. The fish are bled and brain spiked
when they come on board. The fish are
usually chilled for additional good handling
practices. The deckhand can fillet your
catch on the return, if you desire for a
small fee. Deckhands depend of tips as part
of their income, like waiters and
waitresses. |
